For Those Who Want to Invest in the Manufacturing Sector
Malaysia' rapid industrialization over the last three decades has attracted foreign direct investment from over 40 countries covering the following:
  • . Promoted activies and products which are eligible for consideration of pioneer status and investment tax allowance
  • . Promoted activities and products for high technology company

Promoted sectors include electrical and electronics products, chemicals and chemical products, petroleum products, transport equipment, machinery equipment, iron and steel, supporting products and services, pharmaceutical and related products, software engineering and textile products. Currently, Malaysia is host to more than 3,000 foreign manufacturing companies, which have expanded and diversified their operation over the years.

Among the factors which have attracted these foreign companies, inter-alia includes the granting of expatriate posts to foreign companies based on the following criteria:
  • . A company with foreign paid-up capital of US$2 million and above will automatically be allowed five expatriate posts including key posts (permanently reserved posts for foreigners) as long as the foreign interest remains in the company. Additional expatriate posts will be allowed upn request and when necessary.
  • . For companies with foreign paid-up capital of less than US$2 million, key posts can be considered where the foreign paid-up is at least RM500,000. This figure, however, is only a guideline and the number of key posts allowed depends on the merits of each case.
